Real Shinobi from Iga & Kōga

Every ninja name here comes from real shinobi families and operatives of feudal Japan — not invented shadow-syllables. The surnames belong to the two great ninja regions: Hattori (服部), Momochi (百地) and Fujibayashi (藤林) of Iga, and the Kōga (甲賀) clans of Shiga, plus the Fūma (風魔) of Odawara.

The given names are just as real — Hanzō (半蔵) of the Hattori line served Tokugawa Ieyasu, Sandayū (三太夫) Momochi led southern Iga, Kotarō (小太郎) Fūma was the Fūma clan's most feared leader, and Chiyome (千代女) Mochizuki trained a network of kunoichi spies. Japanese order is respected throughout: Hattori Hanzō, never Hanzō Hattori.

Because names are written in kanji, the same sound can carry different meanings — Shinobu is written 忍, the very character for "endure" and "stealth" that gives the shinobi their name. Every card shows the kanji so you see the meaning at a glance, not just how the name sounds.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a ninja name generator?
It's a name maker that combines real shinobi family names from the Iga and Kōga clans — like Hattori, Momochi and Fujibayashi — with historical ninja given names such as Hanzō, Kotarō and Chiyome. Each result shows the kanji, hiragana, phonetic reading and English meaning, in Japanese order (family name first).
Are these real ninja names?
Yes. The pool is drawn from actual shinobi families and operatives — Hattori Hanzō served Tokugawa Ieyasu, Momochi Sandayū led southern Iga, Fujibayashi Nagato was an Iga grandmaster, and Mochizuki Chiyome trained kunoichi. Each name has verified kanji and meaning. No made-up sounds.
What is the difference between a ninja and a samurai?
Samurai were the armored warrior class bound to a lord; ninja (shinobi) were covert agents who worked in stealth — espionage, infiltration, sabotage and surprise attack. This generator uses the shadow-warrior families and names; the samurai name generator covers the warrior class.
Why is the family name first?
Japanese names always put the family name first — Hattori Hanzō, not Hanzō Hattori. The ninja name generator follows this convention exactly, like every other generator on this site.
Can I use these names in my novel, game or RPG campaign?
Yes — free to use in any creative work: fiction, games, tabletop RPGs, worldbuilding, film. No attribution required.
What does shinobi mean?
Shinobi (忍び) is the historical Japanese word for a ninja — it literally means "one who endures" or "one who steals away." Kunoichi (くノ一) is the term for a female ninja. The character 忍 (shinobu) is the same one used to write the name Shinobu.
